Know What’s Required in the New State Building Code
Beginning on January 1, 2014, North Dakota’s State Building Code will include new energy efficiency requirements in the 2012 International Residential Code. Attend this session to learn more about:
1. Basic building science—heat transfer, moisture movement
2. Scope—residential buildings; exempted buildings; alterations, renovations, repairs; mixed use buildings
3. International Residential Code vs. International Energy Conservation Code
4. Overview—focus on envelope, ducts; information on HVAC, lighting, appliances, water heating
5. International Energy Conservation Code Compliance—mandatory, prescriptive, performance
6. Specific requirements—envelope, ceilings, walls (above and below grade, steel frame, mass), fenestrations, floors, slab
7. Performance alternative—trade-offs, computer software (REScheck), mandatory requirements, air sealing and insulation options

About the Instructor
Residing in Bismarck, ND, Earl Torgerson is an Associate Professor of Construction at Bismarck State College, the Owner of Integrity Homes, Residential Construction, and the President of Pine Meadows Inc., all located in Bismarck, ND.
In 2008 Earl received his Green Advantage, Residential Environmental Certification and in 2009 he also completed the Kansas Building Science Institute, Home Energy Ratings Certification. Earl is also a 2010 National Association of Home Builders, Certified Green Professional.
